Enormous Interest in Self-Managing Buildings

Over 100 interested participants sat in front of their screens when Energy Control and Noova arranged a webinar on electricity savings and how to make commercial buildings self-managing.

– It confirms that electricity and self-management of buildings is highly topical, says Tommy Hagenes at Energy Control.

Together with Kjartan Kopren from Noova, the webinar put the spotlight on high electricity prices — but not least on what building owners, facility management staff and tenants can do to reduce electricity consumption.
– The reality is that many buildings still use far too much electricity. Very often we see ventilation running around the clock, but also that ventilation and heating work against each other. The ventilation cools while the building’s heat centre fights to maintain a satisfactory indoor temperature. The result is often sky-high electricity consumption, says Hagenes.

The webinar attracted enormous interest, with over 100 building owners, facility management staff and consultants in attendance. Among other things, they learned how Energy Control approaches a new building.
– The first thing we always do is ensure we have good insight into what is happening in the buildings. Together with Noova we not only get an overview of energy use — we also get a good understanding of how ventilation and heating are managed. Ventilation and heating typically account for between 60 and 80 percent of energy use, so these are the two most important factors to gain control of in any building, says Hagenes.

While building owners and developers talk about location, insight is Energy Control’s most important mantra.
– For us, everything is about knowing. That is why we never do anything without first spending time getting to know the building. We are passionate about finding what we call the building’s heartbeat, says Hagenes.

Once that has been found, it is easy to know what will have the best effect — both in the short and long term.
– It varies of course from building to building, but we often achieve an energy reduction of between 30 and 50 percent — without compromising the indoor climate. The result is usually lower energy use and a better indoor climate, says Tommy Hagenes.
