Ensuring healthy indoor climate at Arendal hospital

No one has stricter requirements for indoor climate than Norwegian hospitals. At Arendal hospital, indoor climate sensors from Energy Control are used to monitor rooms with critical requirements for temperature, humidity and the level of chemical substances in the air.

– The sensors have worked absolutely fantastically for our purposes. We monitor rooms where it is important that temperature, humidity and VOC levels are within given parameters. For us this has worked so well that I believe more hospitals should do the same, says equipment manager in Technical Operations at Sykehuset Sørlandet Arendal, Aage Tjemsland.

Users are very satisfied
Arendal hospital, with approximately 7,000 employees, is one of the largest hospitals in the south of Norway. The current hospital building was taken into use in 1920 and is therefore more than 100 years old.
– I have deployed wireless sensors in both operating theatres and delivery rooms, sterile storage rooms and server rooms. I also received a request from the Eye Department, where they needed to monitor critical equipment inside a temperature-controlled cabinet. I suggested we could test by placing a sensor inside the cabinet to see if it was sufficient. It worked very well and the department now has full control over the cabinet and its contents, says Tjemsland.

He explains that he has set up all the equipment himself, and also created custom dashboards for the users so they can monitor whether all values are within the given parameters.
– I have also set up some alarms that automatically notify users if values exceed the predefined parameters. Everyone has so far been very satisfied, says Tjemsland.

Documenting the strength of the sensors
Tommy Hagenes at Energy Control says the company normally stays away from hospitals. This is not only due to the very strict indoor climate requirements, but also because hospitals often have advanced technical solutions for ventilation.
– We know our sensors are good enough, but we don't want to be responsible for life and health, says Tommy Hagenes, adding:
– That's why it's really great to see what Aage achieves. We have been impressed by what he has accomplished. It not only documents that our technology works, but also that it is easy to use, says Hagenes.
