HVL students to make Tjommi even smarter

Four students from the Energy Technology programme at HVL are doing their internship at Energy Control this autumn. Their task: to make the AI assistant, Tjommi, even smarter.

Together with Simon Leirvik, Herman Andreas Linnestad and Joakim Nygård Hagesæter, he is doing an internship at Energy Control this autumn. They are all studying Energy Technology at HVL. The programme gives them a broad approach to energy and climate challenges, with expertise in areas including renewable energy, energy distribution, energy use and energy efficiency.
– The programme is perfectly attuned to the spirit of the times. We therefore hope and believe that this is a programme that will open up many exciting job opportunities for us in the future, says Simon Leirvik.

Making Tjommi a seasoned pro

At Energy Control they get to work on something that has so far been a rare commodity in the construction and energy sector. They will actively work to train the technology company's AI assistant, Tjommi. The companion was launched earlier this year and is still something of a youngster. Like any "young adult", one is not yet quite fully seasoned. Now the HVL students will help Tjommi join the ranks of the grown-ups. They will give the AI assistant more gravitas.
– As Tjommi trainers we are going to make the AI assistant more user-friendly, but also even better at flagging faults and improvement potential in the building. We've been here a couple of weeks and have already made some improvements, says Herman Andreas Linnestad.

This is something we don't learn at school

The four students started at Energy Control at the end of August and will be placed with the company two days a week until Christmas. So far the four's impression of the company has been positive.
– What we learn here is not something we learn in the classroom. Being allowed to work with artificial intelligence and AI learning is exciting and something that is still little widespread in the construction and property sector. Working with Tjommi gives us a much better and broader understanding of how AI works, which will probably be very useful to us in the future, says Joakim Nygård Hagesæter.
– Right now we are working on the prompting of Tjommi – how to give instructions or ask questions to the AI model. I don't think many of our fellow students are doing the same during their placement, says Linnestad.

Important for recruitment

For Energy Control, including students in operations is about far more than AI training.
– If we are to meet climate targets, we cannot continue doing things the way we always have. We need to think differently, and we believe technology is a central part of the solution. The construction and property industry therefore needs more great minds with a strong understanding of technology, says founder and CEO of Energy Control, Tommy Hagenes.
The company uses and develops new technology itself to give existing buildings a new and more energy-efficient life. In brief, it is about better management of buildings' energy use.
– Our solutions are easy to use, but there is a lot of heavy technology development behind them. Fully understanding how the technology works requires both good building technology expertise and solid IT competence. This combination of expertise is rare and doesn't exist as a single discipline. We therefore need to help educate the resources we ourselves need. We are therefore very pleased to have four students working with us, says Hagenes.

Important for the industry

– What these students learn at Energy Control is not on the curriculum. We try to bring it into education, but this is a development that is happening now. Being allowed to go into a company and see how they work with artificial intelligence in real life is therefore extremely valuable, says associate professor at HVL, Anne Sofie Handal Bjelland.
From an educational perspective she therefore believes it is of great value that companies like Energy Control take the time to take in students and offer them internship placements.
– The experience these students gain not only strengthens their own education – it also means the construction sector gets great minds who can contribute to the further development of the industry, says Bjelland.
